God believes in you (even if you don't believe in God)
I was making a new friend and I introduced myself, "I am a youth pastor" and she said, "I don't believe in God." I replied, "That is ok God believes in you." And thus was born one of my twelve words of wisdom.
As someone who has always believed in God, I admit I don't understand not believing. But that is because as an intuitive feeler, the Other feels very near most of the time. I do have a great respect for all religions, and I find I have much to learn from my atheist and agnostic friends.
God's existence does not rely on our belief. The Holy One is the I AM. We are like the blind men touching the elephant- each with our own piece of the truth. I believe non-believers also hold a piece of the truth. Maybe so much of what we Christians are "sure of" is not as clear as we want it to be. If we would listen rather than forcing our truth on others, I think the world would be a better place.
I met as a Spiritual Director with an atheist once. Since conversion is not my aim, I was uncomfortable and unsure of what to ask. He was there at the request of his girlfriend, and so I think he was uncomfortable as well. I am sad that we did not get to interact further, I think he had much to teach me.
If you are an atheist, agnostic, or simply in a time of spiritual crisis, remember God believes in you!
